London, 12 September 1876.

A scholarly letter concerning access to medieval and Anglo-Saxon manuscripts at Lambeth Palace Library. Holder thanks the recipient for an invitation to visit Lambeth Palace on a Thursday morning, before listing the manuscripts he is interested in including “The Fight at Finnesburg”, described as a small fragment of an Anglo-Saxon poem, together with Lambeth codices containing Claudian and Horace. Holder further references George Hickes’ Thesaurus linguarum Septentrionalium, the great early study of northern languages and Anglo-Saxon scholarship.
Alfred Holder was a German philologist and classical scholar, particularly associated with Celtic and early medieval studies as well as his three-volume lexicon of Celtic languages.
