D'ORSAY, Count Alfred (1801-1852). Autograph Letter Signed, inviting the recipient to an evening gathering of literary men to meet the American Minister. Prince's Square, Kensington Gardens, 18 July [c.1840s].
 
Single sheet, 115 x 180 mm, on embossed stationery of 13, Prince's Square, Kensington Gardens, W., written on one side only. Old horizontal and vertical folds and a small trace of former mounting to the blank reverse, otherwise a very good example with a large, bold signature.
 
D'Orsay writes: "Will you join a few literary men here on Monday 24th, at 10 p.m., to meet the American Minister."
 
One of the great personalities of nineteenth-century London society, Count Alfred d'Orsay was a French aristocrat, artist and celebrated man of fashion whose circle centred upon Lady Blessington's salon at Gore House. His friends and acquaintances included many of the leading literary and political figures of the age, and this invitation reflects his role as a host bringing together writers and diplomats in fashionable Victorian London.
