Autograph letter signed by Queen Victoria's secretary to Repton School, 1891

One page, approximately 180 x 115 mm. Very good condition with original folds.
 
A single-page autograph letter signed, written by Ponsonby from Windsor Castle to the Rev. William Mordaunt Furneaux (1848-1928), Head Master of Repton School. Ponsonby writes that he is "commanded by The Queen" to enquire whether "the boys may have an extra week holiday this summer if it does not interfere with the regular work of the School." 
 
Ponsonby served as Queen Victoria's Private Secretary from 1870 until his death and acted as the principal channel through which the Sovereign communicated with ministers, institutions and private individuals. This letter was written during the period of Queen Victoria's state visit to Derby in May 1891, when Furneaux presented the Queen with a ceremonial address. Although the identity of the boys is not stated, the letter records a personal request made on the Queen's behalf concerning arrangements for members of her household at Repton School.
