£125.00Price

FERBER, Edna (1885-1968). Autograph letter signed, Claridge's, Brook Street, London, 8 December 1932.

Single sheet folded, written on two sides, 155 x 185 mm. On blue-grey Claridge's headed paper. Old folds and contemporary or later ink annotations to the upper left corner, otherwise very good.

A letter from the American novelist and playwright Edna Ferber, written during a stay at Claridge's in London. Ferber apologises for being unable to attend on Friday, and that she must see another acquaintance: "I've left a lot of contracts hanging in mid-air."

The letter was written at an interesting point in Ferber's theatrical career. Her play Dinner at Eight, had opened at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway on 22 October 1932, less than two months previously. A London production was shortly to follow, opening at the Palace Theatre on 6 January 1933. Ferber's reference to outstanding contracts is perhaps related to this.
