A LETTER REGARDING RUSKIN'S STONES OF VENICE
 
INGLIS, Robert H (1786-1855); RUSKIN, John (1819-1900). Autograph letter signed by the Oxford MP to John Ruskin, thanking him for a presentation copy of the first volume of The Stones of Venice shortly after publication. 1 Bedford Terrace, 10 March 1851.
 
Single sheet, approximately 155 x 115 mm, written on one side. Signed. Old folds as issued, with loss to the upper corners, light foxing and a few small stains, but the text and signature remain clear and entirely legible. Good. 
 
An excellent literary association letter written by Sir Robert Harry Inglis, Conservative MP for the University of Oxford, acknowledging receipt of a presentation copy of the first volume of John Ruskin's monumental study The Stones of Venice, published in March 1851.
 
Inglis writes:
"I am exceedingly obliged to you for thinking me worthy to possess your first volume; most beautiful at a first glance, more interesting at a second, and promising me great enjoyment..."
 
He closes by sending "our united best regards to Mrs Ruskin", a contemporary reference to Ruskin's first wife, Effie Gray, three years before the collapse and annulment of their marriage. A desirable literary association letter from the Oxford MP Sir Robert Inglis with John Ruskin at the publication of his defining works of art criticism.
