MONTGOMERY, Robert (1807-1855). Autograph Letter Signed to Sir William Hamilton (1788-1856). Glasgow, Thursday Night, May 5, 1842.

A four-page autograph letter, one folded sheet (110 x 180mm), written on all four sides. Very good. Horizontal folds with light age toning and a few trivial marks. Strip of paper to the left hand edge most likely from the letter being mounted in a book at some point.

An interesting letter from the Scottish minister and poet Robert Montgomery to the philosopher Sir William Hamilton, 9th Baronet, then Professor of Logic and Metaphysics at the University of Edinburgh. Writing from Glasgow while incumbent of St Jude's Episcopal Church, Montgomery discusses the proposal to establish an Episcopal Chair at the University of Edinburgh and reflects upon the wider question of theological education in Scotland.

Sir William Hamilton, the recipient, was among the foremost Scottish philosophers of the nineteenth century, appointed Professor of Logic and Metaphysics at Edinburgh in 1836. A good association letter linking two notable figures in Scottish intellectual and ecclesiastical life.
