Autograph letter signed by Major General Stanley Clarke about the Boer War 1900

£60.00Price

CLARKE, Major-General Sir Stanley de Astel Calvert (1837-1911). Autograph letter signed on behalf of the Princess of Wales concerning the South African War. Marlborough House, Pall Mall, 23 November 1900.

Autograph letter signed, one folded sheet of black-bordered mourning stationery, written on the first three sides. A couple of light stains or marks and slight mounting residue to the final blank side; otherwise very good.

Written to R. W. Campbell, a Liberal political correspondent, acknowledging his letter concerning the Second Boer War. Clarke writes on behalf of Alexandra, Princess of Wales, informing Campbell that “it is obvious Her Royal Highness is unable to interfere in the matter”.

Clarke was a British Army officer and royal courtier who served as Private Secretary to the Princess of Wales. Alexandra, then wife of the future Edward VII, became Queen Consort only two months later following the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901.
