A parliamentary letter written while Smyth was serving as Tory MP for Drogheda, concerning a petition forwarded from his Irish constituency for presentation to the House of Commons. Writing from the Union Club in London, Smyth explains that the petition has been charged in transit from Ireland and asks that the charge be removed without delay so that the petition may proceed to Parliament.
At the time, petitions from constituencies could involve significant carriage and postal expense, particularly where bulky signed documents were transmitted between Ireland and London.
William Meade Smyth (1787-1866) sat as MP for Drogheda between 1822 and 1826.
