Autograph letter signed by Lord Polwarth about the Great Northern War 1720

A letter about negotiations between Sweden and Denmark in the Great Northern War
 
CAMPBELL, Alexander Hume, Lord Polwarth, later 2nd Earl of Marchmont (1675-1740). Letter signed to William Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan, concerning negotiations between Sweden and Denmark during the closing stages of the Great Northern War, Copenhagen, 30 March 1720.
Letter signed, 2 pages with conjugate blank, Copenhagen, 30 March 1720. Folded, lightly browned, with some old reinforcement to the upper edge and later pencil annotations to the blank verso; otherwise very good.
 
A diplomatic letter written during the final phase of the Great Northern War. Polwarth reports that Major General Levenorn should by then have reached Stockholm and expresses the hope that "the Treaty betwixt Denmark & Sweden may be well advanced before My Lord Carteret leaves Stockholm". He also remarks that Copenhagen is "very quiet" and that there appears to be no preparation for another campaign.
 
Polwarth was Britain's minister at Copenhagen and played an active role in attempts to reconcile Denmark and Sweden. The letter was written only a few months before the Treaty of Frederiksborg of July 1720, which brought the conflict between Denmark-Norway and Sweden to an end. John Carteret, mentioned in the letter, was then acting as one of Britain's principal diplomatic intermediaries in the northern peace negotiations.
 
The recipient, William Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan, was one of Marlborough's closest military associates and a senior soldier and diplomat under George I. A contemporary document relating directly to the diplomatic settlement of the Great Northern War.
