Henry Paget (1768-1854), 1st Marquess of Anglesey, was one of Britain's most celebrated cavalry commanders. Having distinguished himself throughout the Napoleonic Wars, he commanded the British heavy cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo, where he was struck by cannon fire during the closing stages of the battle, necessitating the amputation of his right leg. The incident became one of the most famous episodes associated with Waterloo and with the Duke of Wellington. Although administrative in content, letters from Anglesey are rare.
