Autograph letter signed by Henry Paget, Commander Waterloo dated 1852
PAGET, Henry William, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768-1854). Autograph letter signed to the Earl of Minto, referring to Lord Raglan. Beaudesert, 29 December 1852.
One page folded, written on three sides; mounted with a contemporary steel-engraved portrait of Anglesey. Folded as sent; creasing from original folds; mounting on the rear blank side; minor foxing and light surface marks; signature bold and clear. A very good letter.
In the letter, Anglesey apologises for a delay in offering congratulations, stating that it was only through 'a letter that I have received from Ld Raglan” that Anglesey became aware of “the appointment of your son.” He refers to one of Minto's son being given, most likely, a military appointment.
Addressed to Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 2nd Earl of Minto, prominent Whig politician and former First Lord of the Admiralty. The letter mentions FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan, Wellington’s former military secretary and later Commander-in-Chief during the Crimean War.
Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768–1854) commanded the British heavy cavalry at Waterloo, where he lost his right leg to cannon fire. He subsequently served twice as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and remained active in political and military circles into the 1850s.
