Autograph letter signed by George Lenox Conyngham Foreign Office 1844

£125.00Price

CONYNGHAM, George Lenox (1796-1866). Autograph letter signed, written in his capacity as Chief Clerk at the Foreign Office, to G. Ward. Foreign Office, 24 February 1844.

Bifolium, 8vo (sheet approx. 230 × 185 mm folded), written on three sides. Folds and minor handling wear, otherwise clean and legible. Very good.

Official Foreign Office correspondence acknowledging receipt of a letter concerning the Paris & Continental Spectator, a Paris-based English-language periodical reporting on continental European affairs. Conyngham writes under the authority of the Earl of Aberdeen, then Foreign Secretary, and explains the department’s position regarding the journal’s circulation and subscription within the Foreign Office, including instructions for the supply of copies and payment arrangements.

The letter provides a clear example of mid-Victorian Foreign Office administration. George Lenox Conyngham served as Chief Clerk at the Foreign Office and was a senior career civil servant.
