Autograph letter signed by French finance minister Jacques Necker 1788

NECKER, Jacques (1732-1804). Signed official letter to Antoine-Jean Terray, Intendant of Lyon, Paris, 15 October 1788.
 
Single sheet, 320 x 210 mm, written on one side and signed "Necker" at the foot, with integral address to "M. Terray Intendant de Lyon". Folded as sent. Toned towards the upper edge, with some light spotting and handling marks; strip of old tape reinforcement to the reverse. Very good overall. Accompanied by a later engraved portrait of Necker, 210 x 140 mm.
 
An administrative letter written during Necker's second period in government, only weeks after his recall by Louis XVI in August 1788 and on the eve of the French Revolution. Necker informs Antoine-Jean Terray, Intendant of Lyon, that the King has entrusted M. Blondel, Intendant des Finances, with the administration of the veterinary schools of the kingdom, and asks Terray henceforth to correspond with Blondel on all matters concerning the veterinary school at Lyon. The subject is particularly notable for its connection with the École vétérinaire de Lyon, founded in 1761 by Claude Bourgelat and generally regarded as the world's first veterinary school.
