Autograph letter signed by British Prime Minister George Canning dated 1818
CANNING, George (1770-1827), Prime Minister. Autograph letter signed with initials, Gloucester Lodge, 10 March 1818.
Single page, 120 x 180 mm. Old folds, with remnants of former mounting at the corners of the verso. About very good.
An autograph letter signed by Canning using his initials GC to an unnamed correspondent, discussing the timing of a communication concerning "the choice of H.M." (perhaps His Majesty) Canning observes that the proximity of the 13th might cause letters to cross in the post, adding, "I have no doubt which is most desirable." A parliamentary postscript reads: "No debate yet - I suppose the 2d Reading must afford one."
Written while Canning was serving as President of the Board of Control in Lord Liverpool's administration. A former Foreign Secretary, he would return to that office in 1822 before becoming Prime Minister in 1827.
