EASTLAKE, Sir Charles Lock (1793-1865). Autograph letter signed arranging an appointment with the artist William Charles Thomas Dobson. 7 Fitzroy Square, 23 January 1855.

 

Single sheet, 115 x 185 mm, written on one side. Old folds and mounting residue to the reverse, otherwise very good.

 

Eastlake invites W. C. T. Dobson to call upon him, suggesting either before ten in the morning or between four and six in the afternoon. The recipient was William Charles Thomas Dobson (1817-1898), a painter of religious and genre subjects who had studied under Eastlake at the Royal Academy Schools. Sir Charles Lock Eastlake was a leading painter, scholar and administrator of Victorian art. He served as President of the Royal Academy from 1850 and, later in 1855, became the first Director of the National Gallery.
