Autograph letter signed by artist / writer Sir Charles Locke Eastlake 1851
EASTLAKE, Sir Charles Lock (1793-1865). Autograph letter signed to the sculptor Peter Hollins concerning the closing date of the Royal Academy Exhibition. 7 Fitzroy Square, London, 31 July 1857.
Single sheet, 115 x 185 mm, written on both sides. Old fold, otherwise very good.
Eastlake acknowledges Hollins's enquiry about the closing of the Royal Academy Exhibition. He explains that it had been considered advisable to keep the exhibition open slightly longer than usual, with the precise closing date awaiting confirmation by a committee, but expects Saturday 16 August to be the final day.
Peter Hollins (1800-1886) was a Birmingham sculptor who had trained under Francis Chantrey and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Eastlake was then both President of the Royal Academy and the first Director of the National Gallery.
