EASTLAKE, Sir Charles Lock (1793-1865). Autograph letter signed as Secretary to the Fine Arts Commission concerning the exhibition of models for sculpture. Whitehall, 14 March 1844.
 
Single folded sheet, 180 x 230 mm, written on one side. Old folds, otherwise very good or better.
 
Eastlake acknowledges receipt of the recipient's letter announcing his intention of sending models for sculpture for exhibition in June, in accordance with the notice issued by Her Majesty's Commissioners on the Fine Arts in May 1843. He adds that public notice will shortly be given stating where the works are to be sent.
 
The letter was written while Eastlake served as Secretary to the Fine Arts Commission, established to oversee the artistic decoration of the new Palace of Westminster and to encourage British historical painting and sculpture. Before becoming President of the Royal Academy and later the first Director of the National Gallery, Eastlake played a central administrative role in the Commission's competitions and exhibitions.
