Autograph note signed by artist / writer Sir Charles Locke Eastlake
EASTLAKE, Sir Charles Lock (1793-1865). Autograph note signed identifying Count Athanasius Raczynski's history of modern German art. Undated.
Single sheet, 95 x 110 mm, written on one side and mounted on later card. A few marks and old folds, with a pencil note by Eastlake to the reverse, otherwise good.
Eastlake identifies the book as Histoire de l'art moderne en Allemagne, naming Count Athanasius Raczynski as its author and describing it as a quarto volume full of wood-cuts. On the reverse he records that the note was addressed to Mr Landseer and sent to him by his daughter, Miss [??] Landseer.
Count Athanasius Raczynski (1788-1874) was a Polish aristocrat, diplomat, collector and writer on contemporary European art. The recipient was John Landseer, the engraver and father of Sir Edwin Landseer, while Miss Landseer was most likely one of his daughters. Eastlake was a painter, art historian and administrator, later serving as President of the Royal Academy and first Director of the National Gallery.
