A 2 sided letter from the celebrated Dutch-born British painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema enclosing a memorial containing a printed list of names which he hopes "may help somewhat in the good cause". He also adds a short list of further names including Sir George Lewis. 
 
One of the most commercially successful artists of the Victorian period, Alma-Tadema became renowned for his highly finished classical scenes inspired by the archaeology and architecture of the ancient world. Elected a Royal Academician in 1879 and later knighted, his work enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime and has remained among the most sought-after of nineteenth-century British painters.
