DAWKINS, Richard MacGillivray (1871-1955). Autograph letter signed providing bibliographical references for Greek songs. Circa 1906-1913.

Bifolium, written over two sides, each page 175 x 115 mm, on British School at Athens headed paper. Old folds, a few light marks and minor foxing, otherwise very good.

Writing in response to an enquiry, Dawkins supplies three bibliographical references relating to Greek songs and music, including publications containing texts in modern and European musical notation. He carefully records Greek titles and publication details, before concluding that he does not know of any other works on the subject.

Richard MacGillivray Dawkins was an archaeologist, linguist and scholar of modern Greek who served as Director of the British School at Athens from 1906 to 1913. During this period he combined archaeological work in Greece with extensive research into Greek dialects, songs and folklore.
