George Augustus Selwyn (1809-1878). Autograph Letter Signed to T. Dixon Spain concerning a Practical Guide and Bristol Tradesmen. Lichfield Palace, 1 December 1876.
 
Single sheet, folded (4 pages), 110 x 180 mm, on engraved "The Palace, Lichfield" letterhead, dated 1 December 1876. Accompanied by a mounted engraved portrait of George Augustus Selwyn measuring 80 x 110 mm. Light horizontal and vertical folds, a little scattered foxing and age toning, mounting to reverse, otherwise very good.
 
Autograph letter signed by George Augustus Selwyn, Bishop of Lichfield and formerly the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand, thanking T. Dixon Spain for sending his "Practical Guide". He adds that the Bristol tradesmen's list "struck me at once, as it contains exactly the information which I was enquiring for at the Wakes' main hall, Shrewsbury a few weeks ago", before thanking Spain for the two copies and enclosing a cheque in payment.
 
George Augustus Selwyn was one of the most influential Anglican bishops of the Victorian period. As the first Bishop of New Zealand from 1841 to 1868 he established the Anglican Church throughout the colony before returning to England as Bishop of Lichfield.
