VICTORIA, Queen. Autograph letter concerning military appointments during the Crimean War.
Balmoral Castle, 18 September 1854.
Single sheet folded (180 x 110 mm), written on Balmoral Castle stationery. Autograph letter by Queen Victoria in ink over 2 pages, with a contemporary docketing note in another hand on the final page summarising the contents. Blank third page. Light creasing, toning marks and old fold marks; very good overall.
An attractive royal working letter written by Queen Victoria at Balmoral during the Crimean War, recording her approval of senior British Army appointments following the deaths of serving generals. The letter makes references to lieutenant-generals, regiments, and replacement appointments. The final page carries a contemporary filing note headed "Her Majesty The Queen / 18 Sept. 1854".
Queen Victoria took a close personal interest in military affairs throughout the Crimean campaign, particularly in relation to army leadership and administration. Written only weeks before the Battle of Balaclava, the letter shows her direct involvement in the formal machinery of wartime military appointment.
