Autograph letter fragment with a sketch by illustrator Harry Furniss n.d.
FURNISS, Harry. (1854-1925). Autograph letter fragment with original pen-and-ink caricature, n.d.
Single leaf (110 × 170 mm), written in ink on laid paper. The surviving leaf is the illustrated page only, the remainder of the letter having been removed by a previous collector; old mounting dominating the verso. The recto displays a pen-and-ink caricature of a moustachioed male head, integrated into the text, and is signed by Furniss. Addressed to Lord Portarlington, though the content is fragmentary. The sketch is of someone initialed C.W.S.
An example of Furniss’s informal drawings, that he often added to his correspondence. Furniss was one of the leading British political cartoonists and illustrators of the late nineteenth century, best known for his work for Punch and for illustrating Lewis Carroll's Sylvie and Bruno.
