Autograph letter by the Duke of Wellington to publisher John Booth 1817

Autograph letter in the third person, 1 page on a single sheet folded for posting, 180 x 115 mm, Apsley House, 25 April 1817. Integral address panel to "John Booth Esq / Duke Street / Portland Place", signed "Wellington" by the Duke as a postal frank, with contemporary postal markings. Some toning and soiling to the address panel, with a small area of loss at the upper left edge, not affecting the text; otherwise very good.

An early Apsley House letter linking Wellington with the contemporary publication of accounts of his greatest victory. The recipient was John Booth, the London bookseller and publisher of The Battle of Waterloo, also of Ligny and Quatre-Bras, a substantial compilation of official accounts, eyewitness material and documents concerning the campaign. An enlarged edition of Booth's work appeared in 1817, the year of the present letter. Written from Apsley House in April 1817, shortly after Wellington acquired the London residence which would become permanently associated with him.
