MURRAY, Sir David (1849-1933). Autograph Card Signed thanking Miss Chappell for her Congratulations following his appointment as Chairman. Langham Chambers, 13 January 1917.

Autograph card signed, 120 x 90 mm, on printed card headed "1, Langham Chambers, All Souls' Place, Portland Place, W.", dated 13 January 1917 (the final digit corrected from 1916 to 1917). Paperclip mark to the upper left corner, otherwise very good.

A signed card from the Scottish landscape painter David Murray to Miss Chappell, thanking her for her congratulations following his appointment as chairman. Murray writes, "A little grateful voice from a pile of letters sends you thanks for your most kind congratulations. I shall do my best to aid ... the fine old institution & depend on my good friends keeping a kindly & watchful eye on our doings." Signed in his characteristically large and flamboyant hand.

Sir David Murray was one of the leading British landscape painters of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy from 1876 and later serving as President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Written from Langham Chambers, home of the Langham Sketch Club, it is perhaps his elevation to chairman of the club that his note relates to.
