A dramatic panoramic view of the funeral cortege of Napoleon approaching Les Invalides during the Retour des Cendres ceremonies of December 1840. Victor Adam depicts the immense scale of the state procession as the Emperor's funeral car advances between lines of troops, veterans, and vast assembled crowds towards the dome of the Invalides, illuminated by ceremonial fires and military salutes. The plate forms part of Victor Adam's Retour en France des Depouilles Mortelles de Napoleon, a suite of twenty lithographs documenting the exhumation, return, and state funeral of Napoleon in 1840.
