Original dark grey cloth, gilt lettered spine; a near-fine copy, clean and square, in the striking original Verpilleux dust-wrapper printed in red and black, toned at spine and edges, a short tear to the bottom of the spine, but unusually well preserved. Contemporary ownership inscription to front endpaper.
 
The first appearance in English of Tikhii Don (1929), the first part of Sholokhov’s vast chronicle of Don Cossack life during the First World War, Revolution, and Civil War — the principal literary monument of Soviet realism, later awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1965. The novel’s scale and moral gravity drew early comparison with War and Peace, its realism shaped by the author’s own Cossack origins and wartime experience.
 
The dust-wrapper design — a bold constructivist portrait of a Cossack with hammer-and-sickle emblem, attributed to the mysterious “Verpilleux” — is among the most arresting of 1930s jacket designs.  A key work of twentieth-century literature and genuinely rare. Copies in the wrapper and in this condition are uncommon.
