Original colour portrait of Christabel Pankhurst, published as a supplement to Vanity Fair, 15 June 1910, by Leslie Ward ("Spy"). Image approximately 190 x 330 mm, mounted. Printed title "Women's Suffrage" and identification "(Miss Christabel Pankhurst.)" beneath the image, with "Vanity Fair Supplement" at head and Spy's monogram within the image. Hentschel-Colourtype, London. Some minor handling marks otherwise very good or better.
 
An original Vanity Fair portrait of Christabel Pankhurst (1880-1958), one of the leading figures of the British women's suffrage movement. The daughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, Christabel was a co-founder of the Women's Social and Political Union in Manchester in 1903 and became one of its principal organisers and strategists. 
 
Published at the height of the suffrage campaign in June 1910, Ward's portrait presents Pankhurst under the deliberately direct title "Women's Suffrage". It appeared during the period of the first Conciliation Bill, when the question of women's parliamentary suffrage was again before Parliament. The portrait was subsequently reproduced in smaller formats, including postcards associated with the suffrage movement; the present example is the original large-format Vanity Fair Supplement.
