An envelope written by Prime Minister David Lloyd George to his second wife 1931

Original House of Commons embossed envelope, addressed entirely in Lloyd George’s hand to Miss F. L. Stevenson at the Summerley Estate, Bognor, with George V 1 1/2d stamp postmarked House of Commons, 4 February 1931. Roughly opened along the upper edge, with substantial associated tears and creasing, but complete, the embossed House of Commons seal remaining clear.
 
An ephemeral item from the relationship between David Lloyd George and Frances Louise Stevenson. Stevenson became Lloyd George’s private secretary in 1913 and remained both his closest political assistant and his mistress for many years, eventually becoming his second wife in 1943, following the death of his first wife Margaret in 1941. She accompanied him through the defining years of his political career and later assisted extensively with the preparation of his War Memoirs. The envelope was sent while Lloyd George was leading the Liberal Party in the House of Commons. Although lacking its original contents, it retains a particularly direct association between Lloyd George and the woman who occupied the central private and professional role in his later life.
