A dramatic depiction of the mortally wounded Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson is shown collapsing into the arms of attendants while the action continues around him, capturing one of the defining moments in British naval history. The scene draws together the elements that became central to Nelson's legend: heroic sacrifice, victory in battle, and the preservation of British naval supremacy during the Napoleonic Wars.
Published by Thomas Kelly of Paternoster Row on 17 May 1815, the engraving appeared only weeks before the Battle of Waterloo and at a moment when Britain once again faced the prospect of conflict with Napoleon.
