MACDONALD, J. Ramsay. American Speeches.
London, Jonathan Cape, 1930.
First edition. Octavo, pp. 157, with appendix. Original burgundy cloth, spine lettered in gilt. In the original cream dust-wrapper printed in black to upper panel and spine, priced 3s. 6d. net to front flap. A near fine copy: cloth clean and bright, corners sharp, text block fresh. Wrapper lightly toned and in two places creased to the edges, minor surface marking, but unusually well preserved.
A collection of speeches delivered in the United States by Ramsay MacDonald during his 1929–30 visit, issued at the height of his second premiership. The volume includes addresses to Congress, speeches at George Washington University, reflections on Anglo-American relations, peace, labour, and international cooperation, together with an appendix printing the joint statement of President and Prime Minister. The introduction is by C. G. Dawes, then American Ambassador to the Court of St James’s. An attractive example of a dust-jacketed first edition, rarely found in such condition.
