ALS from pre-rafaelite artist Arthur Hughes about Dante Rossetti dated 1889
HUGHES, Arthur (1832-1915). Autograph Letter Signed about Dante Rossetti's original sketch 'Faust & Margaret in the prison', Wandle Bank, Wallington, Surrey, 11 December 1889.
1 sheet, 150 x 210 mm, written on one side. Old horizontal and vertical folds. Small circular stain to right centre; minor traces of old mounting to verso at left edge. Otherwise clean and entirely legible. Very good.
A letter from Hughes granting permission for the reproduction of a Rossetti original sketch in the Arts and Crafts periodical The Hobby Horse. Hughes writes: “I shall be glad to let my Rossetti sketch appear in the Hobby Horse… I presume you mean the ink sketch of Faust & Margaret in the prison,".
Written from Hughes’s residence at Wandle Bank, Wallington, where he lived from 1878 to 1891. Hughes had been directly associated with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite circle and it looks like he was the owner of one of Rossetti's original sketches.
