ALS by the 1st Duke of Wellington about a portrait painting dated 1841
WELLINGTON, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). Autograph letter signed, about his appearance for a commissioned full-length portrait, 20 December 1841.
1 sheet folded (190 x 120 mm), written on three sides in a clear hand, signed Wellington on the third page; fourth side with a later pencil note identifying the author. Folded as posted. A short tear to one of the fold edges otherwise, very good.
A letter concerning the duke’s appearance in a formal portrait, noting that "Lord Anglesey desired I should have a full length portrait of me, in the uniform of a Field Marshal". Wellington goes on to describe details of dress, observing that the coat is "the same as that of a Lord Lieutenant of a County, only in gold", and gives instructions relating to embroidered elements and their dimensions.
The letter is to artist John Lucas, who painted a full-length portrait of Wellington in 1841 for Lord Anglesey, that is now housed at Plas Newydd Museum in Anglesey. Lord Anglesey, Henry Paget, served under Wellington as one of his commanders in the Battle of Waterloo, where he famously lost his leg to a cannon ball and exclaimed, "By god sir, I've lost my leg!", to which Wellington replied "By god, sir, so you have!". Wellington's full-length portrait is situated on the stairwell of the museum.
