Allan Quartermain by H. Rider Haggard first edition 1887
HAGGARD, H. Rider. Allan Quatermain. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1887.
First edition, first issue. Octavo. [viii], 278, [2]pp. Portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature, 19 further plates, and illustrations within the text. Original dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt to the upper board and spine.
Very good. Spine and narrow adjoining portions of the boards faded, giving a noticeable two-tone appearance around the spine area. Mild rubbing to the corners and extremities, otherwise the cloth remains clean and the gilt is bright. Binding sound. Internally unusually clean, with only occasional light spotting and no previous ownership inscriptions or other ink. All plates present.
First edition, first issue of Haggard's sequel to King Solomon's Mines, again featuring Allan Quatermain, Sir Henry Curtis and Captain Good, together with Umslopogaas. Published in 1887, Allan Quatermain continued Haggard's enormously successful series of African adventure romances and became one of the best-known works associated with his celebrated hunter and explorer. A well-preserved copy in the original cloth.
