After the Deluge 1910-1935: A recital pamphlet illustated by G.K Chesterton 1935
CHESTERTON, G.K. (Gilbert Keith) After the Deluge 1910-1935.
Wilton Park. Tessa Richardson Song Recital.
Beaconsfield, Excelsior Printing Works, 1935.
8 pp. pamphlet, 210 x 270 mm, printed programme with illustrated wrapper. Light spotting and minor edge wear, else very good.
An ephemeral concert pamphlet issued for a recital at Wilton Park on 24 October 1935, with programme of English, French, and German song, including Purcell, Boyce, Bach, Brahms, and Schubert, with texts and translations. The occasion appears to have been charitable, with an address during the interval “on behalf of the Home.”
The front wrapper bears an original satirical design by G. K. Chesterton, signed with his distinctive monogram and closely comparable to drawings published in G.K.’s Weekly. Titled “After the Deluge (1910 / 1935),” the biblical title and inversion of worldly justice reflects Chesterton’s Christian social thought, here expressed in a rare piece of ephemeral design. He has also written the rhyme on the front cover:
"No work is for the worker
No wealth is for the well:
even cheats do not get weathly:
but children still get well"
Unrecorded and likely produced in small numbers for local circulation, such survivals of Chesterton’s graphic work in pamphlet form are uncommon.
