CHURCHILL, Winston S – a signed postcard [with] the Ceremonial / Order of service booklets

Postcard: London: Walter Thomas (1933)

Ceremonial / Order of service booklets: London: HMSO (1965)

An important group of items relating to Winston Churchill, consisting of:

An A6 postcard of a middle-aged Churchill, sat writing at his desk in 1933; the postcard in black and white, and unused with it being blank on the reverse; Winston Churchill has signed his name in blue ink across the front of the image, latterly the image would display a facsimile black signature, but this card is from an earlier printing and is clearly signed in ink by Churchill himself; the postcard is in near fine condition with no obvious marks or faults.

[with]

The Ceremonial to be observed at the funeral booklet is A4 in size or large 8vo and the order of service is A5 or small 8vo; both are bound in wire stitched cardstock wraps, printed and bordered in deep purple with the Churchill arms on both covers; Ceremonial is pp 12 and Order of service is pp 20; both booklets are crisp and bright inside and out, with only minor handling wear and soiling.

A nice pairing of valuable Winston Churchill items.

The postcard taken by Walter Thomas at a time when Churchill was prolific as a writer, penning his first autobiography along with that of his ancestor the Duke of Marlborough. He was out of favour with the Government at this time and kept himself busy on his writing projects. It is within this context that this image, signed by him, is most relevant of that time in his life.

The Order of Service and Ceremonial booklets are becoming increasingly rare. They were printed specifically for those invited to attend Churchill’s state funeral ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral on 30 January 1965. It was attended by the Queen, royal family, Harold Wilson the Prime Minister along with representatives from 112 countries. By the time of Churchill’s death aged 90, he had become a living national memorial. His death completed his transformation into a national icon.

It is difficult to find anything signed by Winston Churchill and so with the booklets, it is a rare group of items.
