An early First World War memoir by Captain Robert V. Dolbey of the Royal Army Medical Corps, covering his service with the British Expeditionary Force during the opening campaigns of 1914, including the retreat from Mons, the Marne, and First Ypres, and subsequently his captivity in a series of German prisoner-of-war camps. He was held at Crefeld, Minden, Sennelager bei Paderborn, and Guetersloh before his eventual return home. The work combines front-line medical experience with a detailed account of conditions in German camps.
Copies in the original dustwrapper are uncommon, and this example is further enhanced by a contemporary presentation inscription in the year of publication, together with the survival of the author’s printed compliment slip.
