A Portfolio of Aubrey Beardsley's drawings for Salome Oscar Wilde 1907
BEARDSLEY, Aubrey (illustrator); WILDE, Oscar. A Portfolio of Aubrey Beardsley’s Drawings Illustrating "Salome" by Oscar Wilde.
London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1907.
Folio portfolio (approx. 355 x 276 mm). Title leaf and list of plates, with 17 line-block plates (photoengravings), complete. Original publisher’s half cloth portfolio over paper boards, front cover lettered in gilt with decorative motif; original ties lacking. Boards rubbed and marked, with partial loss to paper covering on lower board and small scuffing to upper; cloth a little marked; gilt dulled. Internally complete, plates generally clean and well-preserved, with toning to margins and handling marks. About very good.
A complete portfolio issue of Beardsley’s celebrated illustrations to Wilde’s Salome, here presented as a suite of line-block reproductions after the original designs first published in 1894. Complete portfolios are increasingly rare with the original publisher's folder, the plates often having been dispersed individually for framing.
