A photographic portrait signed and lined by Senator George Hoar dated 1898
'Man is his own star.'
HOAR, George Frisbie (1826-1904). Signed photographic portrait with autograph quotation, 1898.
Mounted photographic portrait, 90 x 130 mm, showing Hoar seated in his study or office. Signed beneath the image "Geo F. Hoar" and additionally inscribed "Man is his own star", dated 1898. Some surface loss and scuffing to the reverse from former mounting, with "September 1898" added in another hand; the photograph and inscription remain well preserved. Very Good.
George Frisbie Hoar was a Republican Congressman and, from 1877 until his death, United States Senator for Massachusetts. A prominent and independently minded figure in late nineteenth-century American politics, he was particularly noted for his opposition to American imperial expansion. A rare signed portrait.
