£250.00Price

FERDINAND II OF ARAGON (1452-1516). Latin legal manuscript on paper. Dated 4 August 1501.

Single sheet (320 x 210 mm), written on both sides in a contemporary late Gothic cursive hand, approximately 70 lines in total. Dated "4 Ag. 1501" (4 August) and heading "Ferdinandus" at head of text. Old pen identification to left margin attributing the document to Ferdinand II of Aragon (1479-1515). Unbound. Central vertical fold, with some loss and chipping to margins, a few small holes and areas of wear, but the text substantially preserved. Hand watermark visible when held to light. Waterstaining to upper right hand corner. Good.

An early sixteenth-century Latin administrative or legal manuscript apparently issued under, or relating to, the authority of Ferdinand II of Aragon. The text is written in a formal chancery-style cursive hand and contains numerous legal and administrative formulae, including references to royal authority, officials, witnesses and public testimony. While the precise subject matter has not been fully identified, the manuscript appears to form part of a judicial, notarial or governmental proceeding.

A genuine Renaissance manuscript dated 4 August 1501, surviving from the period of Ferdinand and Isabella and retaining its contemporary heading, date and watermark.
