A group of bookplates and correspondence by fencing historian Jacopo Gelli 1902

£100.00Price

GELLI, Jacopo (1858–1935). (Fencing historian and bibliophile). A group of ex-libris material and correspondence, annotated by Gelli, 1902.

A group comprising three engraved or printed ex libris for Gelli — two in red and one in black, each depicting 18th-century duellists in combat — together with his trilingual printed exchange slip (French, English, and German) corrected in his hand, adding a manuscript forwarding address in Switzerland, and the original postmarked envelope, again hand written by Gelli to Mrs Codrington, England, dated 1902.

Jacopo Gelli, the Florentine scholar, bibliophile and historian of fencing and arms, was the author of La scherma italiana (1890) and curator of the Museo Stibbert.

A particularly complete and attractive correspondence set, illustrating Gelli’s personal participation in the early twentieth-century international exchange culture of personal bookplates.
