£70.00Price

HAGGARD, H. Rider (1856-1925). A Farmer's Year: Being His Commonplace Book for 1898. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899.

First edition, first impression. 8vo. xx, 489 pp. With 2 maps and 36 illustrations by G. Leon Little, complete as called for. Original dark blue cloth, gilt decorated and lettered to upper board and spine. Rubbing to spine ends, edges and corners, with some general surface wear. Previous owner's name signed twice at the front, on the endpaper and following free endpaper. Sporadic foxing, mostly confined to the preliminaries. An unrelated old bookseller's entry for another Haggard title is pasted to the rear endpaper. Very Good.

Haggard's account of a year in agricultural life, centred on his own farming experience at Ditchingham in Norfolk. Arranged through the seasons, it combines practical observations on crops, livestock and estate management with broader comments on agricultural economics, labour and rural society.
