A Calendar of Saints for Unbelievers by Glenway Wescott first edition 1932
WESCOTT, Glenway (1901-1987). A Calendar of Saints for Unbelievers. The text by Glenway Wescott. The signs of the zodiac by Pavel Tchelitchew. Paris: Harrison of Paris, 1932.
First edition. Number 38 of 695 copies on specially made cream-coloured Pannekoek paper. 240 pp. Original dark cloth with decorative gilt spine, in the original slipcase with printed paper label. Some rubbing and scuffing to the boards, particularly the upper board; slipcase toned and rubbed, with a split along the upper front edge, but otherwise sound. Internally clean and very good. Overall about Very Good.
The tenth publication of Harrison of Paris, designed by Monroe Wheeler and printed at Haarlem by Joh. Enschede en Zonen under the supervision of J. van Krimpen. The colophon notes that this was the first book printed in Van Krimpen's twelve-point Romanee type.
Wescott's text presents a secular and often wry calendar of saints and their legends, arranged through the year, combining brief biographical and anecdotal accounts with reflections on the traditions surrounding them. Illustrated with twelve zodiac designs by Pavel Tchelitchew, together with a further tailpiece. An attractive example of Harrison of Paris book production.
