London: George Newnes Limited (1916)

8vo; in original publisher’s red binding with black lettering on the upper board and spine; the rare dust wrapper with a portrait of Winston Churchill to the upper panel, and the correct price of 2/6 net to the spine, lettering and borders entirely in navy blue; pp [vi], xiv, 162, [ii]; the spine of the book has a small strip of fading to the top of the spine, the dust wrapper is lightly toned to the spine also and toned to the top of the front panel, there are trifling amounts of wear to the spine ends and corners, with a tiny tear to the top right hand corner of the lower panel, otherwise the book is in near fine condition and certainly rare to find in such nice condition.

Alexander Scott was a liberal MP and was the first person to write a biography about Winston Churchill. He did so in 1905, when Churchill was 31. In 1916 Scott revised his biography. He extended and updated large parts of it.

Churchill had been promoted to first lord of the admiralty and was charged with overseeing Britain’s naval effort in the Great War. Churchill’s doomed plans in the Dardanelles put paid to his cabinet post and he was removed from office. Scott covered this in this book, in a chapter cheerily called ‘The Downfall’. It is rare to find this book and jacket in such nice condition.
