White Teeth + Lippes Loop signed by Zadie Smith 1st / 1st 2000
First UK edition and first print published by Hamish Hamilton in 2000. It is in fine / unread condition. The wrapper is very complete with no tears or chips. The book is very presentable with clean and bright boards. The pages have no foxing or previous owners ink. Overall a fine / unread copy and signed by the author to the title page. She has inscribed to a previous owner “I’m bored of this book. The Launch of Lippes Loop”. The author most likely signed this at a book signing for White Teeth and at the same time handed out copies of a privately printed publication called ‘Lippes Loop’. This was a collection of short stories, poetry and essays. It was put together by Zadie Smith along with James Flint and Nicholas Laird. All three have signed this copy to the front cover. Overall a fine signed copy of Zadie Smiths first novel along with a scarce and highly collectible signed copy of Lippes Loop.
The novel focuses on the later lives of two wartime friends—the Bangladeshi Samad Iqbal and the Englishman Archie Jones—and their families in London. The novel is centred around Britain's relationships with people from formerly colonised countries in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
The book won multiple awards, including the 2000 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, the 2000 Whitbread Book Award in category best first novel, the Guardian First Book Award, the Commonwealth Writers First Book Prize, and the Betty Trask Award. Time magazine included the novel in its list of the 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.
