Warleggan by Winston Graham first edition 1953

London and Melbourne: Ward, Lock & Co., 1953

8vo., dark red cloth lettered in gilt to spine; in the original pictorial dust jacket (clipped), showing a windswept Demelza in front of an open window; endpaper maps; pp. [viii], 9-351, [i]; a very good copy with slight shelf lean; a little bubbling to the boards, and the odd spot to endpapers; contemporary ownership inscription to verso of ffep; the very good, unrestored jacket creased and rubbed to edges and along folds, resulting in a couple of small holes to the lower fold; lightly sunned to spine with some shelf marks to the lower panel.

First edition of the fourth Poldark novel, the striking dust jacket artwork purportedly by Arthur Shilstone, who had originally provided the same artwork for the American edition of Demelza.

Warleggan continues elaborating on the lives of the Poldark family, including marriages, deaths and the peaks and troughs of various relationships in the wake of the French Revolution. Covering the year between 1792 and 1793, it is split into four ‘books’, beginning in May 1792 and concluding on Christmas eve the following year. The events chronicled were featured in season 2 of the 2015 TV adaptation featuring Aidan Turner.
