London: Walter Scott (1889). First British edition. A four volume set all uniformly 8vo., original navy blue cloth boards, gilt lettering to the upper boards and spine, with an armorial motif on both; pp. 359 (1) 392 (2) 424 (3) and 408 (4); A very good set. The first volume with rubbed spine ends and a small stain on the spine. Corners are rubbed. There is browning to the front and lower free end papers. Volume two only very light handling wear. The corners are gently pushed and very mild wear to spine ends. Faint browning to first and last couple of pages. Volume three a couple of scratches to the side text block and a mark to the lower board. faint browning to a page or two. Volume four rippling to the cloth boards towards the text block on the upper board. A small stain to the spine and rubbing to spine ends and corners. Marks to the lower board. Overall a very clean and well bound set in the original publishers binding. 


Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole, his translation is considered the first authorised edition, and was used to publish the first US edition and then this first British edition in the same year. An unauthorised translation was circulated three years previously. Tolstoy's masterpiece, that has been adapted to the big screen and spawned tv series as well. The BBC has had a go twice, most recently in 2016.
