Verlaine Signed Presentation copy by Harold Nicolson 1st / 1st 1921
First UK edition published by Constable & Company in 1921. The book without the illusive dust wrapper, is in very good condition. There are marks to the board and the spine is faded. The binding is still holding fairly well and the rough cut pages are all fairly clean with only very mild browning to the preliminary pages. There is a presentation inscription from Harold Nicholson to the front inside board. It is to Maud Cunard. It reads "Maud Cunard, with a particular and not peculiar sense of admiration and gratitude from Harold Nicolson April 19th". This copy is also signed in pencil by Maud Cunard and she has dated it April 2021, suggesting this book was presented by Nicolson to her in the year of publication. There is a bookplate also on the front board of noted collector and bibliophile Anthony Hobson.
Maud Cunard (the mother of Nancy) was a london based, American society hostess. She hosted and mingled with politicians, musicians and writers of the day. David Lloyd George called her 'a most dangerous woman.' She is perhaps known for being a supporter of wallis simpson during the kings abdication. She also held a gathering for the then Prince of Wales and Oswald Mosley. The inscription shows that Harold Nicolson was acquainted with her, as many in their day was. A Scarce title with the presentation inscription between the two.
