Two multi signed Oxford University Boat Club Menus from 1946 and 1953
CLAPPERTON, George Douglas: Two Oxford University Boat Club menus (multi-signed)
Oxford: University Boat Club (1946 and 1953)
Two A5 menus in relation to Oxford University Boat Club; printed on thick card stock and folded once, printed in black and navy blue respectively; both menus have marks and soiling, one has a crease and tiny tear to the bottom edge; overall, both are very good.
These two menus are rare ephemeral items, relating to Oxford’s boat race crews of 1946 and 1954, with both being signed by the rowers that made the crew in those respective years.
One menu is from a dinner held on 30th March 1946, the day of the Oxford / Cambridge boat race, and held at the United University Club in London. The menu is signed by the crew of Oxford and coaching staff. The second menu relates to the trials held in December 1953, in preparation for the 1954 boat race, signed by members of the A & B crew. An interesting menu as many members of the A crew came down with an illness and were replaced by B crew members shortly before the race took place.
The menus were owned by George “Jock” Clapperton, with his ownership signature at the top of both menus. He coxed Oxford in the 1923 and 24 races and would go on to umpire the 1959 & 67 races. Rare ephemeral items of the Oxbridge boat race.
