EDWARD BAWDEN'S COPY

WELLS, H.G. The Time Machine.

New York: Random House, 1931.

Large octavo. 86pp. Illustrated throughout by W. A. Dwiggins with striking Art Deco typographical borders, vignettes, and five full-page or double-page illustrations printed in colour. Publisher's patterned boards with black cloth spine and upper cover lettered in gilt. A little light rubbing to extremities and slight marking to boards, internally clean and fresh. Very good. Edward Bawden's book label to front pastedown.

An attractive American illustrated edition of Wells's pioneering scientific romance, issued with a specially written preface by the author and designed throughout by the celebrated typographer, illustrator and book designer W. A. Dwiggins. Dwiggins, later credited with popularising the term "graphic designer", was among the most influential figures in twentieth-century American book production, and this edition remains one of his most visually distinctive trade book commissions.

From the library of the British artist and illustrator Edward Bawden, whose ownership adds a further layer of twentieth-century design association.
